Firms considering outsourcing their data storage technology and having their server racks and server cabinets looked after by a third party still cite security issues as the biggest barrier to them taking the decision.
According to a new study by Launchpad Europe's IT Security Index 2009, 50 per cent of firms cited "security concerns" as the reason behind not adopting cloud computing, while just 21.4 per cent said it was due to budgetary constraints.
Some 49.5 per cent of businesses surveyed by Launchpad Europe said they were not using cloud computing and had no intention of doing so in the coming 12 months.
"While cloud computing remains high on the corporate agenda, organisations concerns about cloud security will not go away overnight," said Mike Burkitt, technical director of Launchpad Europe.
However, he added: "For organisations with in-house technical capabilities and a good financial situation, the answer to their security fears may lay in the private cloud."
Isilon's Nick Kirsch claims that long-term data storage efficiency is coming to the fore as cloud computing and other virtualisation technologies become more widespread.
