Scotland could house giant data centre - Networking Industry NewsLockerbie Data Centres has outlined plans for an £800 million data centre in the south of Scotland.

The company is one of two firms wanting to site their network equipment in Dumfries and Galloway.

Proposals for the project include a 20,000 sq ft business park and up to 750 new homes.

According to Lockerbie Data Centres, the scheme could create 1,000 jobs in the county.

Project director David King said: "We want to provide something encouraging for Lockerbie, with the support of the council, that will put Dumfries and Galloway firmly on the map as world leaders in data provision."

The company claims that the development would take into account environmental considerations taking some of its power from local windfarms and a biomass power station.

Meanwhile, Rackable Systems is targeting the UK and northern Europe with its customisable networking equipment.

The US firm hopes its low-power, high-density server solutions will prove popular as firms attempt to reduce energy consumption.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19103153-ADNFCR
