Oracle has completed its takeover of Sun Microsystems, diversifying its interests into hardware.
It means the company will now have a significant interest in Network Supplies, complimenting its previous core business of software and databases.
ZDNet reports that, according to Oracle president Charles Phillips, the takeover enables the company to compete with industry giant IBM by integrating software, hardware and support as a single system.
Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle, said: "We're in it to win it. IBM, we're looking forward to competing with you in the hardware business."
The company has promised to spend more money developing SPARC, Solaris and MySQL, as well as improving system performances. Oracle also says it will double the number of hardware specialists that Sun currently has.
The European Union recently approved the $7.4 billion takeover after it had ensured that competition and innovation would be preserved.
Approval for the deal was also required from competition authorities in other countries such as Russia and China.
