The first next-generation fibre-optic broadband network for the UK is set to be completed later this month, according to its manufacturers,
Virgin Media has spent the last 18 months upgrading its existing network technology and claims to have tripled the capacity of its cabling allowing "ultrafast" speeds of up to 50Mb.
According to the firm, the fibre-optic next-generation network will be available to over 12 million homes and will coincide with Virgin Media trialing higher upstream speeds for users.
Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said the whole firm is "delighted with the performance and reliability" of the network cables.
"As the first company to bring broadband to the UK ten years ago, the completion of our next-generation network marks another pioneering moment for internet access in the UK," he added.
BT recently claimed the UK's broadband network could cope with an increased demand put on its if thousands of people were forced to work from home as a result of the swine flu pandemic.
