Pioneer of network equipment virtualisation VMware has opened a new data centre with renewable energy credentials.
The company has created a data storage facility that is powered solely by hydroelectric power.
It is their third environmentally-friendly facility to receive a high-level award for sustainable design and building practices.
VMware chief information officer Mark Egan said: "We are committed to using the lessons learned in the design and development of our data centre to help our customers achieve similar benefits."
Careful placement of server racks and server cabinets, coupled with new air-handling equipment also boost the data centre's green credentials, which the company claims saves them $500,000 a year when compared with standard equipment.
Chief marketing officer at SGI George Skaff recently told Exec Digital that businesses in the UK that exceed 6,000MWh of energy consumption, such as data centres, will soon be hit by new environmental legislation that will push up their costs.
