Agilent Technologies has unveiled a new microplate labelling system which supports the RJ45 networking standard.
The new system uses on-demand barcoding to allow equipment to be labelled as and when it is needed.
According to the company, the Agilent Microplate Labeller is easy to use and represents a significant upgrade from the company's previous system.
It integrates a thermal laser printer which is capable of providing a 600 dots per inch resolution offering a range of 1D and 2D coding technologies.
It can be integrated into existing networks and third-party systems via Microsoft's ActiveX control using either serial RS-232 connectors or RJ45 Ethernet ports.
According to Steve Pinder, GlassHouse Technologies' principle consultant, incorrect labelling can lead to data centre server racks being left unfilled or containing legacy equipment which is no longer used in day-to-day operations.
He claimed: "After a while administrators forget that a particular item is earmarked for decommission altogether."
