New Hong Kong data centre to trigger upgrades? - Data & Server Racks
Digital Realty Trust, which is behind the creation of Hong Kong's first ever Tier III-certified facility in Tseung Kwan O - due to open in November - noted that complying with regulations surrounding data and server racks and keeping up with the competition could lead to more upgrades.
Kris Kumar, senior vice-president and regional head for Asia-Pacific at Digital Realty, explained that obtaining an official rating from the Uptime Institute, which created the industry classification for secure and reliable data centre design, will become more pressing issue in the coming years.
"The reason is simple: information-technology infrastructure has become a life-support system for companies. It's no longer just a nice-to-have," he told the Morning Post.
The new Tseung Kwan O facility, which represents a joint venture with IT services provider Savvis, is located on a 15,236 sq m site and has cost around $160 million (£102 million) to construct.
