Iraq is to be connected to the rest of the Gulf region, and then to the world, through a new undersea fibre networking cable, it has been announced.
Under the new agreement reached between the private submarine networking cable operator Gulf Bridge International (GBI) and the Iraqi Telecom and Post Company, the planned GBI Cable System will be operational by 2011.
The ambitious telecoms project will see Iraq connected to the rest of the world via a high-capacity fibre optic networking cable, with branches to lead to both the Far East and to Europe.
Iraq's minister of communications, Farouq Abed Al-Qader, was quoted by Zawya as saying: "The signing of an agreement comes within the policy of the Iraqi Ministry of Telecommunications to build a strong communications infrastructure which supports development in all areas.
The establishment of a communications network will help reduce the digital gap between the government sectors, he added.
News of the new project comes just days after Britain's business secretary announced plans to invest £1 billion on upgrading the UK's broadband infrastructure in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
