New data centre cooling saves 45 per cent on energy bills - Networking Industry News

New data centre cooling saves 45 per cent on energy bills - Networking Industry News Oil exploration firm Petroleum Geo Services (PGS) has installed new energy efficient cooling technology at its primary data centre.

The new system has achieved a record 45 per cent energy saving despite using well established technology.

Now, the company's Weybridge data centre in surrey has a power usage effectiveness (PUE) score of 1.2, according to Green Grid.

The score is calculated by dividing the amount of power entering a data centre by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it.

Mike West, managing director of Keysource, which built the data centre, said: "To achieve that kind of PUE, you must rely on free cooling."

"As far as we know, no one has come close to this in Europe," he added.

The cooling air supplied to PGS's data centre is sucked through a wall and efficiency is maintained by separating hot and cold air with the careful placement of server racks.

The PUE rating was created by members of Green Grid.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19210333-ADNFCR
