Demand for network cables could increase as more businesses realise the potential of VoIP.
This is the suggestion of IBISWorld, which said that VoIP's ability to be markedly cheaper than landline calls is causing the technology to become more popular.
George Van Horn, a senior analyst at the industry market research company, explained that subscriber and revenue growth in the VoIP industry has been so strong because it is regarded as a "cheaper alternative to traditional wireline services".
"The technology used does not involve the same expensive switching of networks as wired voice calls, and similar to emails, geographic distinction between incoming and outgoing calls is not made," he said.
Mr Van Horn went on to say that because VoIP is part of the "new generation" in communication technology, demand will continue to grow as services improve.
However, its take up in the home may not be so impressive, with just 17 per cent of respondents to a Homephonechoices.co.uk poll saying they planned to use VoIP.
Despite this, the website encouraged people with relatives abroad to use VoIP services thanks to the technology's ability to save them money.
