Microsoft set to buy its host - Networking Industry News

Microsoft set to buy its host - Networking Industry News Microsoft looks set to buy data centre operator Ascent, which hosts some of its online services.

Ascent will be given the opportunity to create a second data storage facility called CH2, which will build on the current power and connectivity services it offers to Microsoft.

The existing CH1 facility, whose sole client is Microsoft, was expected to use a shipping container set-up to allow the firms to cram as many servers and server racks in as small a space as possible.

Located in the suburb of Northlake, Chicago, the data centre was set to house between 150 and 220 of the crates, containing several hundred thousand servers – but it is not known if Ascent and Microsoft followed through with the plans.

Ascent hopes to finish the CH2 facility by the end of 2009 and customers will be able to opt for containerised storage or standard server cabinets.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is set to unveil Kumo, a search engine which it hopes will reduce Google's market lead in the sector.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19181747-ADNFCR
