Microsoft helps with sustainability - Networking Industry NewsMicrosoft has claimed that the IT sector is fortunate in that reducing costs and increasing sustainability amount to the same thing.

The firm claims that in the future there will not be a choice between better performance, reduced costs and a smaller impact on the environment for the IT industry.

Christian Belady, principal power and cooling architect with Microsoft's Global Foundation Services group, said: "Cost and sustainability are one and the same.

"We're extremely fortunate to be in an industry where lowering cost and being green are synonymous."

According to Microsoft, the industry has been focusing on optimising the cost effectiveness of their network equipment but there is a shift towards examining every aspect of individual companies' power usage.

The firm claims that its power consumption is between 30 and 50 per cent below global industry standards for traditional data centres.

Meanwhile, Rod Evans, the head of Rackable Systems' new European operation, claims there is no such thing as a totally green data centre.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19114958-ADNFCR
