Microsoft acknowledge Vista problems

Microsoft acknowledge Vista problemsMicrosoft has conceded that a glitch in Vista's networking programming means that file transfers on local networks are significantly slower if music is being played simultaneously, it has been revealed.

A feature of Vista is that is ensures music is played without interruption even if the system is busy.

However, it seems this is causing problems as file copying across networks is slowed down when Windows Media Player, iTunes or Real Player applications are running.

"There's an unfortunate bug in the NDIS throttling code that magnifies throttling if you have multiple NICs," Microsoft spokesperson Mark Russinovich told PC World.

"If you have a system with both wireless and wired adapters, for instance, NDIS will process at most 8,000 packets per second, and with three adapters it will process a maximum of 6,000 packets per second. 6,000 packets per second equals 9MB/s, a limit that's visible even on 100Mb networks."
