Network equipment manufacturer Luxtera has unveiled a new 40Gbps active optical cable at the Supercomputing 2009 event.
The low-powered Blazar device has already been selected as the backbone for SCinet, which is the world's fastest fibre optic cable network.
Luxtera introduced the first version of the Blazar fibre optic lead in 2007 and the updated version, serial number LUX5010A, uses 30 per cent less energy than rival products, the company states.
The firm claims that the resulting reduction in power consumption is brought about by improved thermal efficiency.
Luxtera new cable also has intrusion detection and protection (IDP) features, which the company state boosts network security.
"The addition of IDP features to our products emphasises the advantages of silicon photonics optoelectronic integration and its ability to add innovative features without adding cost," said Luxtera's vice-president of marketing Marek Tlalka.
Recently, researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, said they had developed a new time telescope could increase the amount of data it is possible to send down fibre optic leads substantially.
