Low energy data centres get approval - Networking Industry News New low energy data centres are becoming more commonplace as green IT becomes a bigger issue for businesses.

Server racks and server cabinets filled with green and increasingly virtualised technology will start to become par for the course, it has been claimed.

According to ZDNet, firms intent on cutting their energy consumption – and therefore their operating costs – include IBM and Microsoft.

IBM is set to build one of the greenest data centres in the world, which will use 50 per cent less energy than a typical centre.

The 6,000 sq ft building proposed for construction in New York will cost US$12.4 million (£8 million) and will use the latest energy-efficient servers and cooling systems.

Meanwhile, WorldBackups.net is planning to build a data centre in Wiltshire which will be entirely powered by renewable energy.

The company expects to switch on the facility in the second quarter of 2010.

"Pioneering technology isn't solely the preserve of Silicon Valley or hi-tech hotspots in the UK," managing director of the firm said.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19205678-ADNFCR
