Library broadband to reach 1Gbps - Networking Industry News

Library broadband to reach 1Gbps - Networking Industry News Broadband in the UK's libraries is set to reach speeds of up to 1Gbps as a government funded project aimed at tackling low data transfer rates is rolled out.

The Janet network could push internet speeds at book depositories up to 1Gbps and has already been made available to many museums, schools and universities.

Roy Clare, chief executive of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, said: "People and communities using public libraries across the country are set to benefit from faster broadband speeds and more digital capacity."

Mr Clare claimed that a recent study found that implementation of high broadband speeds showed the technology was "beneficial for the public and cost-efficient to achieve".

Last week, Dame Wendy Hall urged the government to boost its fibre optic broadband scheme.

She claimed that the increasing number of high-bandwidth broadband services, such as high definition video and cloud computing, was making the technology essential.
