Juniper Networks is to introduce a new chip for its T Series core routers that will boost speeds up to 250 Gbps.
The new generation of chips means a single, half-rack system will now have a total capacity of four Tbps.
Trials will take place over the second half of 2010, with a release date set for some time early in 2011.
Stefan Dyckerhoff, senior vice president and general manager, Core Business Unit, Juniper Networks, said: "The chipset we are introducing today is the next step in our core routing strategy, delivering unparalleled investment protection and enabling our customers to continually scale their networks."
The networking news comes after reports earlier this month that Cisco, Juniper's main competition in providing server solutions, was getting ready to introduce its own upgrade.
It was suggested that the MSC120 will have 120 Gbps per slot, giving a combined throughput of over two Tbps.
