India to launch National Knowledge Network

India to launch National Knowledge NetworkIndia is set to launch a National Knowledge Network to link over 15,000 colleges across the country, it has been reported.

The Union Cabinet has announced its new National Mission in Education in ICT project, which will link educational institutes with a 15-gigabit broadband connection, reports the Indian Express.

It is expected that learning materials will be hosted on the network, alongside with portals where students can share expertise from professionals from the colleges across India.

The ministry aims to ultimately cover 18,000 colleges and host e-books and e-journals on digital libraries.

D Purandeshwari, minister of state for higher education, told the news provider: "The 'National Mission in Education through ICT' would be launched, with the objective of providing connectivity to the learners to the 'Knowledge World' in cyberspace and to make them 'netizens' in order to enhance their self-learning skills and develop their capabilities for online problem solving."

PC World recently claimed that using an Ethernet network was the best way to counter the "lagging" experienced when running a wireless network.
