International IT firm and network equipment manufacturer IBM is set to launch a new supercomputer processor next year.
The chip is part of the firm's plan to build the world's fastest computing device.
IBM's Blue Waters project will create a computer that can cope with massively complex mathematical computations and will be capable of 10 petaflops ten times faster than today's most powerful device.
In an interview with Cnet, Bradley McCredie, an IBM Fellow in the Systems and Technology Group, said that the new chip is a combination of the company's Power7 processor and a separate device created for IBM's Roadrunner system, which is housed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Mr McCredie told the news provider: "We took some of that genetic material from the Cell programme - ways to do floating point (calculations) - and embedded that right into the Power7 core."
The announcement comes after Intel announced the introduction of a 48-core data centre on a chip processor.
