HP is to open a wind-cooled data centre in the UK, it has been reported.
According to the IDG News Service, the company's Wynyard centre, a 360,000 sq ft facility in the north-east of England, is cooled by eight huge fans that draw in cold air from outside.
Temperatures remain fairly low in the region for most of the year, and although backup chillers are still in place for the occasions when they are needed for the data cabinets, HP has chosen the area because it remains below 24 degrees C for most of the year.
Maurice Julian, HP's UK facilities project director, told IDG: "It's an ideal climate for this type of solution. We're moving large volumes of air at a low speed."
HP says the new data centre will be its most energy efficient yet, although installing the backup chillers added an extra six per cent to the cost.
Data centres with green credentials are becoming increasingly prevalent as they also help organisations cut costs.
Telehouse West recently said that its new facility in east London, set to open at the end of March, will draw at least ten per cent of its energy from renewable sources such as solar panels installed on the roof.
