Hewlett-Packard to compete 3Com acquisition - Networking Industry News

Hewlett-Packard to compete 3Com acquisition - Networking Industry NewsHewlett-Packard has been granted European Union (EU) approval to complete its acquisition of computer network infrastructure product manufacturer 3Com Corporation.

The computer maker, which is also a leading provider of products, technologies and networking equipment, first announced the deal in November, with the purchase set to cost $2.7 billion.

The EU's antitrust watchdog highlighted that the acquisition would have little impact on competition in the marketplace.

A statement revealed: "The Commission's investigation confirmed that the merged company would continue to face a number of global and effective competitors, giving customers the choice from a range of alternative providers for switches and routers."

The statement added that it was believed that the new entity would have a "relatively limited" position in the networking equipment market.

Meanwhile, Hewlett-Packard is hopeful that the acquisition will be closed by the end of June.

In 2002, Hewlett-Packard completed a merger with American personal computer company Compaq.

The company produces products that can be used by households, small businesses and larger enterprises.
