Government to move towards 'cloud computing' - Networking Industry News

Government to move towards 'cloud computing' - Networking Industry NewsThe government is to move towards cloud computing, it has been announced.

Between ten and 12 data centres will be built, replacing the hundreds that currently host the Networking Equipment used by government departments and services.

It is estimated that this will save £300 million and cut power and cooling requirements by 75 per cent. It will also mean the security of data can be consolidated.

Among other plans for the government's ICT infrastructure, there will also be a shift towards using open source software, while a new set of common desktop designs will be implemented across public services.

Cabinet office minister Angela Smith said: "Our new ICT Strategy is smarter, cheaper and greener and will save the public purse £3.2 billion annually."

Cloud computing has been a growing trend within the networking industry in recent years, both at the consumer end and for the organisations that need to provide the server capacity to host it.

Extreme networks recently released the BlackDiamond 8900-xl modules and Summit X480 stackable switches, devices designed to help businesses move towards cloud computing.
