Google unveils details of its server hardware - Networking Industry NewsSearch engine giant Google has revealed the technology behind its internet data centre operation.

The firm made the details of its hardware usage available at a conference at its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Google designs and builds its own servers using standard components available off the shelf.

Each server, which is mountable in commercially available server racks and server cabinets, measures 3.5 inches or two rack units (2U) thick.

Mounted on a Gigabyte motherboard, a pair of x86 processors – either AMD or Intel – power the device, which comes equipped with two high-capacity hard disc drives and eight memory slots.

Each server is backed up with a 12 volt battery supply that can keep an individual machine running for between one and two hours if power to the server is cut as a result of a brown out or PDU failure.

Meanwhile, according to Citrix, data centres are becoming less efficient because of the proliferation of power hungry web 2.0 applications.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19122277-ADNFCR
