Google to install fibre cables to homes - Networking Industry NewsGoogle has announced plans to lay down fibre cables to provide high speed broadband to homes in the US.

The search giant will bring one gigabit broadband services to at least 50,000 homes, with the number potentially rising to 500,000, in trial locations around the country.

In a statement on the company's blog, Google said: "We don't think we have all the answers - but through our trial, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the shared goal of delivering faster and better internet for everyone.

The firm already provides free high-speed Wi-Fi in some parts of Mountain View, California, and recently ran a programme in airports around the country offering free Wi-Fi during the holiday season.

At present a number of providers in the UK and around the world tout fibre optic broadband services, although the last leg up to the home is usually by traditional copper cabling due to the prohibitive costs involved.
