International IT industry analyst Gartner has created a list of seven ways IT professionals can slash the cost of operating their data centres.
According to the organisation, IT managers are increasingly expected to deliver an increasing level of service at a reduced cost and implementing simple cost-cutting measures is a good way to achieve this.
Top of Gartner's list of money saving techniques is network equipment rationalisation which can lead to between a five and ten per cent cost saving.
Meanwhile, consolidation of IT hardware at a single site, whether internally or by using managed hosting can also save a substantial amount of money.
"Virtualisation is also a good way to control energy costs," said Rakesh Kumar, research vice-president at Gartner.
"Although it requires license and project costs, users can expect to see net savings within 24 months," he added.
A recent report from Gartner showed that legal issues could hamper the uptake of cloud computing as companies using the service are still responsible for the data being stored under the law.
