Fortinet planning Wan optimisation device roll-out

Fortinet planning Wan optimisation device roll-outFortinet, the Sunnyvale, California-based network security vendor, is close to bringing a wide area network (Wan) optimisation/app acceleration device to the marketplace, it has been reported.

The firm is considering either adding the application to its existing packages, or selling it separately.

The move has been announced following negotiations with multiple optimisation specialists, after which Fortinet engineers decided that they would be able to develop the product on their own.

According to Richard Stiennon, Fortinet's chief marketing officer, there is an apparent need to introduce the product in the short term given the level of demand.

"A year ago most of our customers were unaware of Wan optimisation, but now our sales guys are increasingly being asked for it," he told Computer Business Review.

Fortinet already develops its own operating system and ASICs (network and content processors).
