Fibre optic network 'to drive down web costs in Afghanistan' – Networking Industry News

Fibre optic network 'to drive down web costs in Afghanistan' – Networking Industry NewsA new fibre optic network has been implemented in Afghanistan, linking the nation by land to the global internet for the first time.

The network cables run to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and mean that people in Afghanistan will no longer have to surf the web using satellite links to other nations, reports CS Monitor.

Officials from the nation have said that the fibre optic network will drive down the cost of the internet, making web access available to a wider spectrum of society.

"We are going to bring the cost down to one-fifth of what the cost is by satellite," Amirzai Sangin, the nation's minister of communications, told the news provider.

The project was funded by the World Bank.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Seacom, in partnership with Cisco Systems, has switched on a new high-speed broadband network in east Africa which uses fibre optic cables.
