Fibre-optic network for Hampshire and Isle of Wight - Networking Industry Newsntl:Telewest Business has been chosen to provide a new £90 million fibre-optic network for public services across the areas of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Over 1,000 sites under the ownership of 15 local authorities, which will include the fire service, schools, colleges and voluntary organisations, will be linked with the new next-generation network.

A Metropolitan Ethernet Virtual Private Network (VPN) will be created as part of the new fibre-optic network to connect country, district and borough councils and other unitary authorities.

It is estimated that around 15,000 staff will be able to access information and applications using the network.

Jos Creese, Hampshire County Council's head of IT, said the new contract will provide "faster, cost-effective and secure networks that will enable public sector partners across Hampshire and the Isle Wight to deliver more efficient services".
