Companies and individuals in the US state of Maine may be able to benefit from faster internet speeds in the near future as over 1,100 miles of fibre optic cable is to be laid.
Known as the Three Ring Binder project, the newly-formed Maine Fiber Company will have the responsibility of ensuring that all the construction and maintenance work runs smoothly.
It is expected that 38 government facilities, 600 community establishments and 110,000 households will benefit from the developments in rural Maine, with $25.4 million in funding coming from the US Department of Commerce.
Investor Robert Monks said: "Maine Fiber Company's Three Ring Binder will deliver high speed broadband access and economic opportunity to the areas in Maine that have been waiting and deserve it most."
Work is expected to begin on the project in the spring, with the project aimed at making broadband available to those currently unable to go online.
Fibre optic broadband is the fastest of its kind available and has been designed to send large quantities of data to various locations at the speed of light.
