Fibre optic broadband making headway in Britain - Networking Industry News Next-generation fibre optic cable broadband supplied by internet service provider Virgin Media has continued its expansion.

Some 531 postcode areas in the UK now have access to the high-bandwidth broadband technology.

According to new research from cable.co.uk, a price comparison site for broadband, internet and phone packages, more than 5,000 customers have signed up for Virgin Media's flagship offering.

Of the 531 regions with access, 39 have complete access to the fibre optic lead technology, while almost 260 of the postcode areas have at least 80 per cent connectivity to the service.

More than 90 per cent of people in Sussex have the potential to sign up to Virgin Media's high-speed broadband, while around three-quarters in Hampshire can access the new technology.

Since the beginning of 2008 , more than 750 businesses signed up to Virgin Media's next generation network in Merseyside.

According to ntl: Telewest Business, which is a subsidiary of Virgin Media, the most popular deal for businesses in the region was the company's Internet Protocol Virtual Private Networks deal.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19310914-ADNFCR
