A new undersea fibre optic cable connecting east Africa with the rest of the world has finally reached the continent.
The East Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) arrived in Mtunzini, South Africa, on Monday (February 16th).
Connections to the cable will now gradually be made across the region, with Maputo set to be the next landing call and it will eventually reach up to Sudan.
The deployment of the EASSy cable will help pick up the speed of internet connections in the region.
Alphonzo Samuels, a managing executive of Telkom, one of the partners involved in the initiative, said: "Together with other undersea cables and/or land based fibre routes, EASSy creates redundant fibre access prospects into East Africa."
Fibre cables cross the seas and oceans around the world providing connections for communications right up from data centres down to internet users.
