Fear of change among IT managers is holding back the expansion of the cloud computing sector, it has been claimed.
Chuck Hollis, vice-president and chief technical officer of EMC, claimed that IT managers are paid to be conservative but they should allay their fears of the technology.
Speaking at the EMC World conference, which brings together executives from leading network equipment manufacturers such as Cisco, Mr Hollis said: "There's an optimistic mood to experiment with new things."
He claimed that many company's were now setting up private clouds with non-critical data in order to get their bearings in the industry.
Mr Hollis added: "Those that are doing it are very excited. It's a low-touch management experience."
The march of virtualisation appears to be proceeding at a fast pace as VMware announces its new smartphone technology will start appearing in handsets next year.
The company is working on the Mobile Virtualisation Platform.
