Faster broadband target needed – Networking Industry News

Faster broadband target needed – Networking Industry NewsThe UK should target a faster broadband speed than the 2Mbps aim outlined in the Digital Britain report, it has been claimed.

This target lacks ambition and will have little benefit for web users, according to broadband comparison site Broadband Genie.

Faster speeds, such as those provided by fibre optic networks, can have significant advantages for both business and personal users.

Chris Marling, editor at Broadband Genie, said: "We can only hope the government's business and enterprise select committee, which announced recently it was holding an enquiry into broadband speed following Digital Britain, will have a little more backbone."

"It is also asking if the 2Mbps target is ambitious enough and the answer is sure to be a resounding no," he added.

Recent research by Ofcom highlighted that the average broadband speed in the UK in April 2009 was 4.1Mbps.

It was also revealed that the majority of users are happy with their speed, although a quarter said it was slower than they had initially expected.
