Social networking giant Facebook has begun construction of its own data centre to create the technical infrastructure needed to meet demand for its services.
Until now, the company initially leased data space and then entire buildings as it rapidly expanded since staring up in 2004.
Linked to the outside world through Fibre Optic Cables, the centre, to be built in Prineville, Oregon, will house all Facebook user information, including photos, videos and status updates.
Key to the new project is the desire to make the environmental impact as small as possible and this will be done through a number of measures, including one of the company's own proprietary UPS Solutions, which it claims will reduce electricity usage by up to 12 per cent.
Telehouse West recently announced that it is to open a new green data centre in east London, with some of its power coming from solar panels on the building's roof.
The facility will house 19,000 square metres of server racks and server cabinets, and promised that ten per cent of its energy use will come from renewable sources.
