The global economic downturn can provide IT firms with a number of opportunities, it has been claimed.
According to IT specialist Chris Atkins, who spoke at the IDC's ICT Efficiency and Sustainability Conference 2009 in London, the credit crunch has pushed green computing up the agenda and firms should be more open to the eco-friendly aspects of data centre design.
Atkins, who is head of product and partner marketing for Sun Microsystems, said: "New economic problems will exacerbate your challenges but also provide an impetus for re-thinking architectures."
"Government regulation and the availability of power, and the costs of power, mean things are going to change," he added.
Atkins claimed that one of the biggest effects of the credit crunch was on the number of firms turning to virtualisation, both in house and with external providers.
Recently, IT firm Isilon's Nick Kirsch said that long-term efficiency in the data storage sector is more vital than ever before as virtualisation and cloud computing become more widely accepted.
