East Africa gets high-speed broadband network - Networking Industry NewsEast Africa now has high-speed broadband after the first of three fibre-optic network cables has gone live.

The network cable has been laid by Seacom, in partnership with Cisco Systems, with the technology due to be unveiled later today (July 23rd) through demonstrations in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa.

It is hoped the 17,000 kilometre cable can bring broadband speeds of 1.28 terabytes per second to east Africa and prompt a surge in internet use across the continent.

A further two fibre-optic cables are to be laid to take the network into Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Brian Herlithy, chief executive officer at Seacom, said: "Today is a historic day for Africa and marks the dawn of a new era for communications between the continent and the rest of the world."

Cisco Systems recently helped Infosys to open its new business processing outsourcing subsidiary in the Phillipines.

The firm provided contact centre technology and telephony integration networks to the site.
