Docklands data centre to power homes - Networking Industry NewsHeat generated by network equipment at a new London Docklands data centre will be used to power homes and businesses in the area.

When completed, the centre will provide heat to a new housing development and a local industrial estate.

The Telehouse West facility is expected to be operational in 2010 and, according to Telehouse Europe, it will generate up to nine megawatts of power by converting the excess heat from its server racks and server cabinets into electricity.

"We recognise that any attempt to address the lack of space within the data centre industry has to be undertaken with a level of environmental awareness," said Bob Harris, Telehouse Europe's technical services director.

He added that making use of waste energy can minimise the environmental impact of the centre and provide a boost to the local community.

A new data centre in North America run by ADC has been commended for its green credentials in the EPA Carbon Dioxide Emissions study.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19129704-ADNFCR
