Data centres are being driven by performance issues, according to new research.
A study sponsored by Brockade and Eaton showed that the uptake of 10Gbps Ethernet is dominating the sector whether data centres are using standard Cat6 Cables or fibre optic leads.
Carried out on behalf of CommScope, the Global Data Centre Survey noted that multi-mode fibre optic cables are supporting faster and faster protocols, with some capable of 40 or 100Gbps Ethernet.
Meanwhile, more than half of companies upgrading their copper structured cabling are looking at 10Gbps network equipment so they can adopt virtualisation and consolidation.
According to the report, the implementation of new technologies is both environmentally friendly and will reduce operating costs.
The North Bristol NHS Trust recently upgraded its data centre facilities with the latest energy-efficient technology, such as environmentally-friendly lighting and a cutting edge cooling system.
It claimed the upgrade would reduce energy consumption by between 40 and 70 per cent.
