Data centres could fail to limit power consumption - Networking Industry News Older data centres built before 2001 could end up using so much energy to power their equipment that they could limit future expansion, it has been claimed.

According to ZDNet, the IT industry may not be able to effectively control the amount of energy it uses for cooling and running data centres.

The website states that the storage facilities use between 10 and 30 times as much power as a standard office – and their consumption of power has double in the past five years.

"With the volatile rate of change in IT technologies, power demands can quickly exceed established barriers in a legacy distribution system," the website stated.

It added that the cost of upgrading or replacing legacy equipment can often be prohibitive and bringing power architecture up to scratch can cost huge amounts of money.

ZDNet recommends creating a thorough power planning process so modern centres can cope with expansion more easily.
