International chip manufacturer Intel has unveiled what it believes is the future of the data centre sector a 48-core microprocessor.
The firm's experimental chip, known as the Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC), has been created to promote research into parallel processing.
Incorporating 24 dual-core processing units, the SCC takes up less space than a postage stamp and is capable of addressing up to 192GB or DDR3 memory.
"This is the prototype of the microprocessor of the future", Joseph Schutz, director of microprocessor and programming research at Intel Labs, said.
The chip could revolutionise the amount of server rack and server cabinet space companies need to meet data storage and operational demands.
Recently, AIS introduced a new space saving server which comes in a variety of configurations and is powered by either Intel's Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo or Atom N270 processors.
The new device is aimed at the small and medium-sized business market and uses relatively less power than competitors' products, AIS states.
