Firms are coming under increasing pressure to cut the cost of data storage while maintaining the same level of accessibility, it has been claimed.
Writing for Exec Digital, chief marketing officer at SGI George Skaff said that the pressure is in part due to the Carbon Reduction Commitment, which will come into effect in the UK in January 2010.
All companies that exceed the 6,000MWh per year of energy consumption will be hit by the legislation and most data centre operators are likely to fall into that category.
Mr Skaff claimed: "It is essential that organisations start now to assess their existing technology implementations and data centre designs to ensure that they can continue to support the needs of their customers without breaching regulations and facing harsh penalties."
However, he added that many businesses were struggling to meet the competing goals of increased energy efficiency and rising demand for data storage and access.
In June this year, IDC Research claimed that data storage demand was likely to increase by a factor of ten in the next few years.
