Businesses from Cumbria are being called on to pilot a new high-speed fibre-optic broadband network, it has been reported.
It has been revealed by BT that Wigton in the area has been chosen as one of ten places from across the UK to test its new Broadband Enabling Technology, reports the News and Star.
The technology allows fixed-line broadband to be delivered over longer distances, up to 12km compared to the current limit of 5km.
Selected homes and businesses from across the Wigton area are being urged to take part in the scheme and sign-up for the new broadband network.
Supporters for the new technology in the region claim a fast internet access is "essential to businesses" and rural firms in Cumbria have been "at a disadvantage" due to a lack of technology.
The pilot scheme is due to commence on September 30th and the service will be available to all UK broadband providers, according to BT.
It was recently reported by the Daily Post that firms in north Wales are flocking to a new fibre-optic network linking businesses between Holyhead and Wrexham.
