Council awarded for green data centre - Networking Industry News

Council awarded for green data centre - Networking Industry NewsBristol City Council has been recognised for the green credentials of its newest data centre, installed in a listed building.

Data Centre 2, as it is known, has been built in Council House and saves £20,000 a year in electricity bills by using chilled water from a moat outside the building to cool the servers.

It has been given an innovation award at the National Datacentre Leaders Awards, which this year focused on green and carbon-reduction issues.

As an added obstacle, the room needed soundproofing because the council chamber sits underneath it.

Bristol City Council Infrastructure Services Manager Geoff Endicott, said: "Working on the design in conjunction with the company Future-Tech, we have achieved an elegant solution to a tricky problem."

The networking industry has recently sought to go green, from large data centres to products for small businesses.

IBM recently announced that its new facility in North Carolina will use half the energy of a normal data centre of its size (100,000 sq ft), while D-Link has worked on a range of green switches.
