Networking industry giant Nortel has deployed a new local area network (LAN) at London's City University, replacing the institution's existing infrastructure.
The upgraded network will provide 10,000 students and numerous faculty members with additional bandwidth and extra security by preventing the plugging in of unauthenticated devices.
City University said the desire among modern students to be hyperconnected was the driving force behind the network upgrade programme.
Carl Stokes, director of IT operations and infrastructure at the institution, said: "With our new LAN in place, we are now planning to implement wireless capabilities across the campuses and investigating the possibility of introducing video applications."
The LAN is centred on Nortel's Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 and is able to support 384 one gigabyte or 24 ten gigabyte ports.
Nortel's Split Multi-Link Trunking also provides "sub-second redundancy for link and switch", according to an official release.
Recent research from Nortel highlighted the growing demand for hyperconnectivity. It revealed that workers would rather take their laptop then their wallet or mobile phone if they were leaving the house for 24 hours.
