Cisco starts new decade with another start-up acquisition - Networking Industry NewsCisco has started the new decade as it ended the old one - by acquiring a promising IT start-up.

At the end of 2009, it was confirmed that the company had bought Starent Networks in a deal worth $2.9 billion as it moved to bolster its presence in the growing global mobile internet market.

Now, reports out of California suggest that Cisco has acquired Rohati Systems, which was set up by former Cisco engineers working towards creating an alternative to traditional computer firewalls.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the move has been engineered largely in order to acquire Rohati's Transaction Networking System, an innovation that allows users greater control over who is able to access what data on a per-transaction basis.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal has revealed that Cisco was behind the largest number of acquisitions of venture-backed companies over the past decade.

The IT giant took on 49 venture capital-backed firms over the ten year period, compared to IBM's 35 and 30 for Microsoft.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19542993-ADNFCR
