Cisco Systems' Unified Computing System Strategy (UCSS) has been criticised by HP.
According to the firm's vice-president of infrastructure software and blades Jim Ganthier, the UCSS network equipment does not do everything it promises.
"Cisco's network-centric view of the data centre is great for bandwidth management, but leaves a lot to chance in terms of service level delivery as well as data reliability and accessibility," he claimed.
"This is not unification, this is a change of control," Mr Ganthier added.
He said that Cisco aims to make a one-size-fits-all data centre solution, but is neglecting the importance of data centre administrators.
Mr Ganthier noted that if it was not for administrators then servers and their applications would be less reliable, more likely to suffer from down time and unable to maintain constant access to mission critical data.
In related news, Cisco has made clear that it plans to move into the blade server market, taking it into direct competition with HP.
