Cisco rivals 'could increase sales'

Cisco rivals 'could increase sales'Cisco move from supplying routers and network switches to offering more full solutions could open up the market to its rivals, it has been suggested.

Writing on Channel Web, Andrew Hickey said other vendors such as ProCurve Networking by HP and 3Com could gain more sales while Cisco looks into solutions such as VoIP, wireless and Web 2.0.

He also cites a survey by Goldman Sachs which found Cisco is losing sales in the routing and network switch sectors, although is share in almost every other field it operates in has increased.

In addition, Mr Hickey writes: "[A] UBS survey found that solution providers are seeing the competition heating up to control the enterprise [local area network] and that more [value-added resellers] will turn to alternative vendors to fill their customers' needs, mainly due to the lower costs and higher returns."

Frank Kobuszewski, vice president of the technology solutions group at CXtec, also told the news provider around half of Cisco's hardware sales are network switches and its sizable installed base will help it fend off competition for the near future.

Recently, Cisco chief executive John Chambers told the New York Times that the firm will increase its Indian workforce by 2,000 employees over the next three to five years.
