The centralised management of data centres is the most efficient method in terms of utilising resources and energy consumption, it has been claimed.
According to Chip Design Magazine's Ed Sperling, the debate over the most efficient way to order a data centre's server racks and storage devices has been a long running one.
However, Mr Sperling wrote on the news provider's blog: "After decades of arguing for centralised control as the most efficient way of using resources, many data center managers are finding it's also the most efficient way to use power."
He claimed that with the advent of Intel's 48-core data centre on a chip processor, the allocation of a storage facility's resources are brought down to chip level.
"At that point, the challenge of getting computers to talk to each other and to shift resources will be significantly confined and power consumption will become a much more localised problem," he added.
Intel's Single-chip Cloud Computer houses 24 dual-core processing units on a piece of silicon the size of a postage stamp.
