A new data centre has been chosen in Manchester to store information collected from the census in 2011.
The Office for National Statistics announced that a 180,000 square foot facility in Trafford Park will be used to process the statistics that will help the government allocate public spending.
According to the Northwest Regional Development Agency, the new centre, run by UK Data Capture, will create 1,300 jobs in greater Manchester.
The ONS welcomed the move, with Census Operations director Ian Cope saying: "Securely capturing all of the information from the returned census questionnaires is a vital part of the census process. We're very pleased that the site has been confirmed."
The census, which is carried out every ten years, will be sent to every household in England and Wales. As well as returning the forms by post, people will be able to complete it online next year.
Last month, social networking giant Facebook announced that it is to build its own data centre after outgrowing the previous ones that it had been leasing.
