The IT sector could be punished disproportionately when Carbon Reporting and Energy Consumption legislation is initiated in April 2010, it has been claimed.
According to Mark Chester, a property lawyer at Wragee & Co, IT users could be adversely hit by the new legislation and the impact could be out of proportion with the actual detrimental effect IT has on the environment, reports DatacentreDynamics.
Speaking at the DatacentreDynamics Conference, which was held in London this week, Mr Chester said: "The scheme could have big implications for data centre managers."
"Operators could be picking up the tax and be unable to pass it on to the user," he added.
Meanwhile, Blade Network Technologies recently discussed the impact of environmental issues on the IT sector at the Green IT Expo.
The company's vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Charles Ferland focused on the topics of data centre optimisation and energy efficiency.
